When I'm doing GNU hacks or generic program technology, I aim for free distributability; but this takes work, since you have to make sure you aren't including licensed technology. When I'm doing big, esoteric, paid-for work, I avoid contact with anything other than generic scientific literature or properly licensed technologies and aim to make the thing just as protectable as possible.
