Well, the ie device driver that I have written does precisely
this---that's how it determines that the card is actually there!  (It
also reads a description register from the StarLAN cards as a
preliminary determination.  If anyone knows how the configuration
parameters should differ between StarLAN and Ethernet, please let me
know!)
