Ok, 386bsd installed easily and quickly on a 486dx33 system. It
has an Ethernet card and the system finds it (we0) on boot.

We have a router. (which I think I have set as the default gateway)

The bsd machine can only ping 127.0.0.1 which is so useless it's not
even funny. Anyway, if someone could help this newbie by explaining
exacltly what would be required in exactly which files.

We have a few gateways the system could try and several nameservers.

Email is appreciated.
