I had this same problem too with an HP 800 machine running HPUX 8.0.

The problem is obviously with the /etc/group file, there may be no more than
8 "root" entries for groups. After removing some entries, all went fine.

It's a fine thing, the machine i'm writing this on needs 6Mbyte diskspace
for booting, the rest is mounted from the HP 800 - it flies after we upgraded
to HPUX 9.0, and the NFS implementation for 9.0 is much more close to SUN's!

Good luck!
