The problem is obviously with the /etc/group file, there may be no more than 8 "root" entries for groups. After removing some entries, all went fine. It's a fine thing, the machine i'm writing this on needs 6Mbyte diskspace for booting, the rest is mounted from the HP 800 - it flies after we upgraded to HPUX 9.0, and the NFS implementation for 9.0 is much more close to SUN's!
