Don't worry, Be Happy.  

patch00504 is a patch that requires the etcdist (which you don't have 
installed), and so it shouldn't be a problem.  One of the complaints
if the original patchkit was that it assumed EVERYTHING was installed,
so I moved to un-necessary or specific hardware patches up to
patches > 500.

Make sure you re-compile and install config, config up your kernel,
make depend, make, and then copy the new kernel to root and your
machine should be more stable.

(Note: There are STILL bugs in the com-driver, so I recommend getting
Chris's driver in the meantime.  Besides, it works better, even if
the old one were fixed..)
