I am trying to setup a single modem line for use with dial-out slip,
dial-out and dial-in uucp, and dial-in shell access. I have installed
CGD's newest com-beta, and have the ports (KW-532) configured in the
kernel with COM_BIDIR, etc.

I am experiencing a few problems, however:

1. Regarding slip -- how can one hangup a phone-line when one
no-longer wants to have the dial-out slip running ( on a port
configured with 'comcontrol bidir' ). Killing slattach doesn't
do it, Trying to use kermit doesn't do it, as the port is busy.
The hack I've got now uses ed to edit the ttys file and turn off
the getty, then HUP's init, then comcontrols the port to -bidir,
then uses kermit, then undoes all of those things, so that bidir
is back on. It seems that there should be a better way. I seem
to recall Chris inquiring about this on the net, but I don't
remember the details now ( It wasn't an issue at the time ).

2. Regarding getty -- I seem to have a problem getting getty to
prompt, and start the login process. It typically works if I kill
-HUP init, but it only works once, Successive attempts fail. The
port appears to be configured correctly, ie baud is correct, etc,
but the getty process just don't do anything. I don't get garbage,
or anything, its like the getty process never wakes up. What
    should the modem's configuration be?

3. Is there a way to lock the getty speed at 38,400? I currently use
slip and uucp at this rate, but unfortunately the getty seems to
only support upto 19,200 (or does it actually do 38400?).
Alternatively, is there a better getty than the standard one?

Anyone wishing to comment on any of these issues would be most
welcome, either email or right here. If there is interest I can
summarize.

Thanks in advance,

Bob.
