First, you want binary compatability, then you want to compile. 386bsd is TOTALLY compatible with all binaries compiled on other 386BSD boxes. :-) It is NOT binary compatable with ANY other machines that run unix-like software (BSDI changed their a.out format). Most, if not all sources from comp.unix.sources will compile under 386BSD, some require minor tweaking. Probably didn't answer all of your questions, but I had fun answering.
