The problem with the install_notes is that it doesn't tell you to extract the bindist first, then REBOOT, then extract the etcdist. Note that the extract program is put into /tmp by the install floppy and it will go away after the reboot and before you extract etcdist. To extract the etcdist, after getting the etc01* files into /tmp, use the following command: cat /tmp/etc* | uncompress | cpio -iadm Also I got the patched kernel from unofficial/patch-kit/kernel.strip.X and installed it. The above info was given to me via IRC from a guy with /nick mycroft My sincerest thanks to him for the help. My next move was to try to get XFree86-1.2 installed and running. I almost have Xconfig correctly working my display adapter, but not in 1024x768 mode. The startx script bombs out and says "Clock value does not match for 1024x768" or something like that... SO I deleted the "1024x768" from the line in Xconfig and it came up just fine in 800x600 mode. However, my Mouse didn't work. I have a Dell 486D/50 with a PS/2 mouse port (microsoft mouse) on the back. The man page for X386 says I can use ps/2 for mouse type, but it requires a "/dev/tty00" (tty00 is an example name) on the line in the Xconfig. I have NO idea what to use for the /dev. There is NOTHING interesting looking in /dev that looks like a mouse driver. Also, I haven't been able to print anything, as there was no lpr device. I did MAKEDEV, and when I lpr README.BSD386, I get a file in the printer queue, but lpq tells me the printer is offline (but it isn't). Any help with the above 2 problems would be appreciated.
