Subject: xinit hangs my machine

I've installed XFree86-1.2 on my machine, a Compudyne 25MHz 486sx
with 8 Megs of memory(no floating point coprocessor). The kernel is
compiled with options XSERVER, UCONSOLE but without the enhanced
console driver. I have a Gateway 2000 CrystalScan 1024 NI
monotor and a Ati VGA-Wondercard, both of which are in the
modeDB.txt file. I've editted Xconfig as directed and done a startx.
The monotor blanks and then the system hangs. (ctrl-alt-del will
not do anything, and the machine doesn't respond to telnet connections.)
What do I need to do to get my system to run X?

Here's what else I've tried. (They all do the same thing)

DiamondStar card (not a 24 or 24X) of unknown type. I believe it's
a diamond star + with Hicolor, and I tried all the diamond star entries.

xinit >xinit.ou with no clocks defined in Xconfig. (Not only does it hang
the system, the file is zero lenght when I look at it.)

A CTX CVP-5468 monitor, and a Hyundai monitor, and all the combinations
of the above equipment, and entries from the modeDB.txt file I could
think of.

My best guess is I've missed a kernel patch somewhere, or I'm cursed.
