I did a step by step elimination of various portions of startup and found that xdm was the culprit! I no longer run xdm and the lockups no longer happen (not 100% true, I once tried to bring up the root menu _before_ all the windows started up and the system locked. However, random lockups _DO_NOT_ occur when using xinit). I've fiddled about quite a bit in the past with xdm for SunOS, but haven't gotten around to check- ing it out in 386bsd as I have some other higher priorities (like an Adaptec 1522 driver). Anyway, try dumping xdm. I think you'll find that your problems go away. Dave S.
