XFree86 supports the protocol used by the PS/2 mouse, but you'll need
a kernel driver for the port it uses.  I have no direct experience with
a PS/2 mouse, but the code in XFree86 implies it has 3 buttons.

Did you try MouseSystems instead of Logitech in the Xconfig?  Works for me
with a cheap dual-mode mouse.
