Hmm, I don't remember exactly, but does the above mentioned chip have
problems...  If so, it could account for the corrupted palletes.

How much Swap?  If you use the standard 5 Meg swap, things don't work very
well when things get loaded down.  (It doesn't work very well when I fill
up my swap either, but it takes a lot longer to fill up 48MB than it does
5MB)

There are no problems that I am aware of with Intel 387's.
