I don't know tip so I am ignoring your first question for someone else's
consideration, but the apropos problem is an FAQ.  If you don't have the FAQ,
ftp it from agate.berkeley.edu (or your favorite 386bsd distribution site)
in ~386bsd-0.1/unofficial/FAQ.386bsd ... er maybe that's 386bsd.FAQ.
Anyway, get yourself a copy -- solution is explained therein.
