Yes, it REALLY improves matters using compressed slip. The overhead is much less. You might want to look into TERM (a program written by a Linuxer which serves a similar purpose) Can't remember his name off the top of my end (O'Reilly is the last name, I think), and his program is supposed to work very well, and doesn't require root privs. on the machine you're connecting to.
