I'm in much the same situation, as I'm buying a 486-based notebook Real Soon Now. There are several people who run Linux on their notebooks. I ran Linux 0.95 on a vanilla 386SX notebook (AMS). I have exchanged mail with people running Linux on a TI (same as a Gateway Nomad 2000) and a CompuDyne (both 486 machines). The consensus is that 8Mb of RAM is necessary to run X, and 16 is better. Both of them are very happy with their notebooks, and Linux ran fine on mine. To my understanding, Linux doesn't currently support suspend/resume. It would run fine through the "sleep mode" on my 386 notebook, though. sjc@cs.purdue.edu Steve Chapin ...!purdue!sjc Brake your bike before the wall, or you'll break your bike upon the wall!
