There's these two PCs, one of them an oldisch 386 and the other a newish 486. Both have this SMC ELite plus 16 installed; the jumper settings such that irq 10 with i/o address 0x300 and ram area at 0xcc000 are used. Both of the machines recognize the cards on boot, it is possible to ifconfig them up and indeed ping a few packets to and fro. Alas, after telnetting from the 486 into the 386 and getting about half a screen full of output, the connection hangs and the 486 box tells us "rejected 65531". Okay, so I found the appropriate printf in if_we.c, but it doesn't mean anything to me :-( /* hey, when's that book due ? */ The 386 box does not show these symptoms. Hmm... the cards are supposed to be WD8013 compatible; I've patched the kernel with the appropriate patches and tried with and without "WD8013" option. The 486 box has 20 MB RAM, but throwing out the excessive 16 MB didn't do any good. Re-configuring the card on the 486 to have its RAM located at 0xe0000 didn't help (same special effects - yes that was while using a kernel that expected the RAM to be at 0xe0000). Any clues ? Please ? BTW what's the latest version of the FAQ ? We tend to mirror both agate and gatekeeper but the latest version we have is August 1992. Hmm.
