Unix-domain sockets *are* local.  For 386bsd, it is the only local
connection type available.  The others in the FAQ are for SYSV -- where
there are a few different streams-based local connection types
available.  Even for SYSV the Unix-domain sockets (when available) seem
to be the quickest local connection type.
