I have grabbed s couple of noce backup utilities that allow multivolume
compressed backups, by using tar(1) and few routines to write tmpfiles,
and write to disk.  

I have put it at:

ref.tfs.com:/usr/packages/diskback/diskback.tar.Z

one can acces it via anonymous ftp.
