So far S3 VESA Local bus cards are not showing higher performance than their ISA cards. It is almost as if the VESA Local bus interface was not properly design. I will find out more about this in the near future by testing an S3 card with a faster local bus interface (I can't named the manufacturers till I am certain that they perform faster) There appears to be a hardware bug in the 805 chipset (Vesa Local Bus) which prevents the card from generating maximum performance with XS3. I have measured other components of the server which are not affected by this hardware bug. The fastest benchmarks that I have seen are on a 486/50Mhz ISA systems. The 486DX2 66 systems have managed to generate up to 20% less performance. The lowest priced S3 911 (Eclipse) which I have seen is $120 :-) If you do decide to buy an S3 based card make sure that you get the fastest memory possible for maximum performance within a given class of S3 chipsets. When I get my hands on a working S3 928 card which works with XS3, I will let everybody know :-) Regards, Amancio -- This message brought to you by the letters X and S and the number 3 Amancio Hasty | Home: (415) 495-3046 | ftp-site depository of all my work: e-mail hasty@netcom.com | sunvis.rtpnc.epa.gov:/pub/386bsd/incoming
