You didn't say *where* it freezes.

I had a problem with the bootstrapper on my HP Vectra.  My temporary
solution (since I really didn't feel like debugging it) was to make a
kernel with `root on wd0a', and without the code to automatically
change the root device, and just boot off floppy.  Later on, I
installed Julian's boot blocks, and everything works fine.
