  Well, just to make sure this wasn't an isolated case, some how
related to my 8 meg of main memory and 30 meg swap; I tried the
same procedure 
  i.e.
    [bash]$  csh
    % unlimit
    % sh

as a simple user (not root) on a 12-meg 33mhz 386DX, with 50 meg
swap and *poof* same reboot (not panic/ no messages, just *poof*)

Thus, it would appear to be a generic problem somewhere...
