Or you could rewrite the /dev/MAKEDEV and move the old one to MAKEDEV.old ...

Maybe MAKEDEVs could be paired to kernels, to allow multiple kernels and
their corresponding MAKEDEVs, with a MAKEDEV.GENERIC for problems ?
