i had the same problem that goes away when I replaced my Oak
card with a TVGA9000. I might have disabled the shadow ram
using the BIOS setup  but am not so sure anymore.

only thing i can think of is that 386ix driver is not using share mem;
or if they are using share mem, they didnt' bother to run a
memory test (which the 386bsd driver does )
