Today is St. Patrick's day. Happy Anniversary 386bsd.
HANG THE ENGINEER
-----------------
In my younger days, through an unrelenting
persuasion by my family, I was forced to go to school.
Be it as it was, my decision was to be a Civil Engineer.
Why not? Engineers made the most money, had the most prestige,
garnered the most respect. However, as time passed, money was no
longer my ally. While at one time, I could have gone to MIT
or even Stanford, my enemy -money- now the distractor of
my goal. As such, I decide that any knowledge learned must
be thorough.
My first engineering class was the classic circle.
The student mixture was black, white, men, women, Indian
(from India), Irish, German, African and Hispanic. The
meager JC I attended had one good prospect. It is this,
the prospect, that will, I hope, dis-stray those of you
still meandering in the maelstrom.
My teacher, Dr. Miller, came from the Roman school
of engineering. It had two simple rules. A good engineer
got anything he wanted, regardless of cost. A bad engineer,
one whose bridge fell down, got hung.
NO IFs, NO ANDs, NO ORs, NO BUTs.
If the bridge falls down, Hang The Bastard.
Why do I speak philosophically and technically in
the same breath?
Because they are one and the same. Those of you that cannot
see this are blinded by your surplus of ambition. Your meteoric
comments have identified your complete lack of forethought and
perception.
I have been told more than once, by many people, from afar
as well as in person, that my utterances welcome detraction and
criticism.
SO BE IT.
IF I am not clearing the air of mind-stifling jargon,
then I have accomplished nothing. My goals are to make my FDC
& QIC-40/80 code not only the best, bullet-proof, example to date,
but also a tool, an instructor, an illustration, a lesson, showing that things can be done right and well.
Those of you that disagree, that think I should not
"Hang The Engineer", have no proof that my tort is unfounded,
your only recourse is not to be seen or heard.
I will, for now, continue to "put people off"; for only
my enemies can find my faults. My allies will resort to
emotional reasoning that, "they do not want to hurt my feelings".
Well, my detractors could care less. They will be the first to
point out my failures. They will find every fault and every
misspelling. Every last character will be scanned for an
inkling of proof that I am, by all means, a moron, a dunce,
and a fool by any perception.
You are welcome to try.
Rodney W. Grimes, beta coordinator for the FDC project,
will have the beta copies of my code by Friday. He is impartial
and of good resolve.

Last Thing: As of the posting of this article, I will
NOT be answering my e-mail.
