It seems there are, shall we say, frictions between Amancio and the XFree team. I haven't actually tried XS3 with XFree 1.2, but as near as I can figure, if there is a problem neither side seems inclined to support this configuration. I have heard that someone (the XS3 team? (Amancio is not a member?)) is adding XS3 or its equivalent into a future release of XFree.
