Well, if you don't have a *really* peculiar Controller, it should work ok with
ESDI. I'm using Linux happily with my ESDI-Drive without a problem. You must
however be aware of the facts that

- ESDI Drives don't map out their errors by themselves, so you must use the
  '-c' option when making the filesystem to check for bad sectors.

- if you have a DOS-Partition mounted with the DOS-Filesystem, you may have
  difficulties when reading/writing files to locations with bad sectors. The
  filesystem will report an error and truncate the file, because a proper
  handling of this is difficult and not yet implemented. This is however not
  a big problem since you can write the file again to another location and then
  clean things up under DOS (or the other way around: copy the file to another
  location under DOS, then reread it from Linux).
