Compact, however it could not be called... Emacs, as even it's creator would have to admit, is a memory hog. However, IMHO, the capabilities it provide in it's extensibility, and it's overall function, the memory hit is worth it. If you are unsure, I would check out the Manual for emacs, which I think can be had at local bookstores.
