This strikes me as suboptimal.  In /sys/i386/conf/YOUR_SYSTEM_NAME:

config          "386bsd"        root on wd0 swap on wd0

just add more devices; i.e.:

config          "386bsd"        root on wd0 swap on wd0 and wd1 and wd2

This will cause `config' to build the corresponding entries in swdevt.
