I recently acquired a pair of Vax-11/750's, complete with RM05's/RM80's a TU78/plus lots of other communications goodies. Guess what they run? 4.3BSD of course! Now, a few questions... is it usual to get source code distribution for 4.3BSD for the VAX line? I also have the sources to rpc4.0 and nfs. Has anyone had any experience rebuilding a system like this? I just overlayed the NFS sources on the vanilla 4.3BSD and tried building it. After a few false starts, I finally got something decent from the build. Of course, even a failed build could mean 10-20 HOURS of wasted time. Needless to say, I haven't been getting a lot of regular sleep. Now, I can't mount anything. But, then again, I'm not using a vmunix that was the result of a build. I used a copy from a "working" 4.3BSD/NFS system. By "working" I mean it seems to work, but all the RPC stuff is broken. See, the NFS sources don't include any kernel (/usr/src/sys) files... Anyway, after staring at a VT220 for a week, I was wondering if I should have asked around on the net for clues, instead of stumbling along. Obviously there is no documentation, except for the vanilla 4.3BSD manuals. Was 4.3BSD w/NFS a hybrid? Or was it a supported product of UCB? Does anyone have any experience getting the two source distributions to work together? One of my problems is things like "find" not compiling because the flag "depthf" is not defined ANYWHERE. LISP also moans, but I can get along without that. Matter of fact, while making in the lisp directory, some utility hangs for ever, trying to cross-reference something. So, I have to kill it to get the make to continue. Hmm... come to think of it, I never checked to see if there was another file on that NFS source distribution tape, beyond the /usr/src tar. Any hints? Thanks!!! P.S.: I found two memory boards in a third Vax-11/750 made by someone we all know and love, Intel! Imagine that! -- Where were YOU in the Blizzard of '93 ???
