Subject: What does this Adaptec 1542B error mean?

Here's a question for someone who has better manuals on the Adaptec
1542B than I have. I just hooked up a borrowed tape drive to my
Adaptec. It seems to attach ok but when I try to read or write it, I
get a console error message along the lines of "controller error
0x12". If anyone can tell me what those bits mean it might help me
diagnose the problem.

BTW, it attaches the first time I try to read/write it, *not* during
boot. Is this normal behavior for tape drives?

Please respond via email.

Thanks,
Dave Cottingham
