They virtual console in linux are an example. Here are a couple of pros and cons: Linux: pros: shared libraries, the best feature linux has going for it. virtual consoles. frequent updates: almost a con because they happen too FAST conserves memory. good integration into DOS. easy access to dos harddrives cons: SLOW filesystem. under linux I got about 500K/sec under 386bsd I get 1200K/sec Bad kernel patching mechanism. just a context diff.... Poor networking performance, it was written from scratch so some credit is due. No standardized source tree. make patches hard. 386bsd: pros: full networking support. fast file system better suited for multiuser operation IMHO more stable commendable patching mechanism standardized ftp sites. easy to port things. more complete unix system. cons: hogs memory large amount of disk are used. hard to use in conjuction with dos.
