But I wanted to make this plea as the Core Team "mouthpiece". It is all well and good that things like NetBSD and 386BSD 0.1.5 (or whatever) are happening. But as all these OS things (including 0.2) go off in their own directions each with several different console drivers, etc, ensuring that XFree86 continues to function on all of them becomes a logistical nightmare. It would be a Good Thing[TM] if all of the folks working on console drivers from all of these projects get together and come up with a single common API (i.e. ioctl()s), at least as far as the interface to the server is concerned. It's bad enough right now with Rich having to maintain server binaries for codrv and pccons. It's only going to get worse. There shouldn't be any major technical obstacles to formalizing the API enough to ensure that a single server binary will run on any of these kernels, regardless of the console driver used. Off my soapbox. -- David Wexelblat <dwex@mtgzfs3.att.com> (908) 957-5871 Fax: (908) 957-5627 AT&T Bell Laboratories, 200 Laurel Ave - 3F-428, Middletown, NJ 07748 XFree86 requests should be addressed to <xfree86@physics.su.oz.au> "Love is like oxygen.
