...not with 386BSD, but with NetBSD. 
You should have the 
Extended BIOS Translation for DOS DRIVES > 1GByte - DISABLED.
You can use the 1542C with all default settings.

I think the trick is in Julian's boot blocks. Either that, or
NetBSD fixed something else that was broken. 

NetBSD folks: You can now officially announce support for 1542C in your 
readme files. It has been independently tested by atleast 2 people.
