This is your mistake. You have to grab one of kc-files too (kc-aha.fs for ISA machines or kc-ahbbt.fs for EISA, containing generic kernels with all major devices (including wd0) but differing in support of an SCSI controller, AHA1542 or AHA1742). These are the only really bootable diskettes. If the kernel boot is complete, you will see a prompt to change the root device. NOW you can insert install1.fs1 and continue the installation process according to the instructions given in the INSTALL_NOTES ;-) and according the prompts given by the installation procedure. The reason for a kernel-only bootable disk (together with a kernel copy facility, see INSTALL_NOTES) is to distribute new generic kernels in the most easiest way by booting off the kc floppy and copying it to your HD. If you don't have the appropriate kc-file for your machine, you may grab it from ftp.uni-duisburg.de: /pub/unix/NetBSD-0.8/floppies login: anonymous, password: FULL e-mail address. >There is a README telling that the install disks are broken but why are they >standing still around? The first (install1.fs) and second version (install1.fs0) were broken, not the one you used (install1.fs1). >Is there a replacement? Or a fix? A patch to patch the patch?
