To paul@isl.cf.ac.uk: I cannot reply to your e-mail, as your mail gateway returns "unknown host". I have tried using DMA channel 3 rather than 7 (in fact the 4110-1 can only use 0-3 :-/) and it works better, but I still eventually get out-of-sync on both cards. I have switched to a 3-Com card now, so I'll address this problem again later.
