I re-cabled the drive as drive 0 and used the original 0.1 install diskette to install 386bsd on the drive, then restored the cableing, rebooted 386bsd system from the real drive 0. This allowed me to disklabel drive 1 with no problem (since it already had an existing label, from the install program). This leaves me with the unanswered question: How does one successfully disklabel a freshly low-level formatted ESDI disk without resorting to these contortions?
