You can also wait another few weeks. Then Bruce Evans'  driver will
probably be ported to bot NetBSD and be in the 386bsd patchkit.
Even with simple 16440's it does not give much silo overflows.
I am running it now for quite some time , together wihn bidirectional
extensions and have not seen 1 silo overflow. I encountered *lots*
of them before I used this driver.
