Helpful souls (Nate and others) pointed me to this nono ^^^^
A killer for IDE drives.

My calculations were wrong.
Mike Murphy sent me this correction:
Your partition table is incorrect. Given that you want a single
partition a mounted on /, and that you want about 48MB swap, it should be:
        qp230at|Quantum Peripherals 230MB IDE:\
                :dt=ESDI:ty=winchester:se#512:nt#13:ns#51:nc#723: \
                :pa#381225:oa#0:ta=4.2BSD:ba#4096:fa#512: \
                :pb#98124:ob#379349:tb=swap: \
                :pc#479349:oc#0: \
                :pd#479349:od#0:
Finally I added :pe#479349:oe#0: and did everything (newfs, mounting) with
rwd1e instead of rwd1h.

With regard to disklabel loss everything seems to be smooth now but
these persisting

      ISA strayintr ff

are driving me crazy, folks. Interestingly I have it only with the twodrive
system. (The twodrive system is a 486/33/8MB, the one drive system an AMD 386/40).
