I went through this some time ago.  I was told by a knowledgable
person that the problem is in /sys/i386/isa/icu.h in the INTR or
INTRSTRAY macros.  Apparently, there is some evidence that some
motherboards are sensitive to how the EOIs are sent to the interrupt
controllers.

I'm just regurgitating what I was told so please take this with a
pound of salt.  My solution was to return my new motherboard.
