That is at least what I've been told.

2 friends of mine run Linux on IDE machines. 386bsd seems to work also
(I have a SCSI machine)

That should work with 386bsd, with a suitably configured kernel. Note
that you have to disable the SCSI board BIOS. And make sure that there
are no conflicting I/O ranges etc.
