By all accounts PPP is better, but I am still using SLIP due to laziness.

I use a little chat program which dials the modem, logs in and then calls
slattach, ifconfig and route. I can post a copy of it all if you want.

Pass. I didn't need any

I just sort do a reverse of the above. i.e. route to delete the routing
table, ifconfig to delete the sl0 entry and then kill slattach. DTR then
drops and modem disconnects.

Oh BTW all the above is manual. I.e. you have to run the script to make
it connect and then when you are done run another script (well the same
one with different args) to turn it off. The nice thing about PPP is you
just request the connection (i.e. try to send a packet), PPP will then
dial up to send the packet. It then sits on line for a pre-determined
amount of idle time and if no packets have been sent, it disconnects.
