It has been a while, but...

When writing for Windoze, use of the API is optional.  You need to call
the API enough to get the GUI, but other than that, you can still "talk"
directly to the hardware.  Talking to the hardware clearly bypasses the DLL. 

LOVE that MS-DOS!
