Well, just after I posted this I tried putting in the new bootblocks.
Seems the floppy bootblocks had somehow overwritten the ones in /usr/mdec,
so were calling init single user.  I am now using the spankin' sd bootblocks
and they work fine.  Enter this one into the "duh" log.
