I have experienced a similar problem except there is no indication of
a panic; the system just reboots. Nothing is logged to indicate what
caused the reboot.

I'm running:

486/66 16MB RAM
386bsd + pk0.2.3
PPP 1.2

I haven't installed any COM driver patches and I have 16450 UARTs.
I'm having other problems with PPP (and SLIP) which I think may be
related to 16450s and/or lack of COM driver updates since I regulary
get silo overflows.

I have established a PPP or SLIP link (PC->modem(9600 bps + MNP 5)
->terminal server->Sun workstation) and have successfully used telnet
and rlogin over this PPP/SLIP connection. The results have been
flaky at best. Sooner or later (usually sooner :-) my telnet/rlogin
locks up. I can sometimes bring a SLIP link back to life using the
slcont script included with the dialup-slip package. If I try to
run remote xterm to display on my XFree86 server I get the xterm
window but no shell output ever arrives. I've traced the remote
xterm process and see that it's waiting in a select call.

Another problem: I don't get any response if I ping the Sun at
the other end of the SLIP/PPP link. I know that there is an
option in some SLIP implemtations to drop ICMP packets but I
haven't (knowingly) configured this option. Why would I be able
to telnet if I can't ping the remote host?

Can anyone tell me if my problems will be resolved by using 16550
UARTs or installing COM driver patches?
