Suppose a person wants to buy a computer and put NetBSD or 386BSD
or Linux and Xfree86 on it. What types of improvements and features
would be most cost effective? I.e. which features improve performance
enough (on which OS) so that you would spend the money on them?

* Processor:  486DX/33 vs. 486DX/50 vs. 486DX2/66 vs. Pentium/66
* Cache:  128K vs. 256K vs. 512K vs. 1M
* Memory:  8MB vs. 16MB vs. 32MB
* Disk controller: IDE vs. SCSI, ISA vs. EISA vs. local bus, disk cache?
* Hard disk:  300MB vs. 500MB vs. 1G
* Video controller: ISA vs. EISA vs. local bus, video cache?
* Monitor:  1024*768 vs. 1280*1024, interlaced vs. non-interlaced

Also, information on any particular brand of hardware that is
particularly good or bad would be welcome.
