IMHO a major draw for BSD4.4 is that it was to be freely copyable. If I understand BSDI correctly, the stuff they do is not freely copyable. If it was freely copyable, then I agree, BSDI would be the people to support. If the BSDI code is not freely copyable, then I think there will still be many people who will want to support a different group. One other problem with the "distribution tape" is the problem of $$$$. I may not have enough bucks to buy a distribution tape, but would like to support a group working on BSD with what I can scrape out of the personal budget. With a commercial company, I couldn't expect to get anything for my money nor would I send them any money if I couldn't get something. With CSRG, I may not have been able to buy a distribution tape, but I was able to get a copy of their freely copyable source. It would have been nice to help directly with their costs if possible. --Phil P.S. I have nothing against BSDI and have had no dealings with them.
