I compiled 2.4.0 with no problems using "configure --target=i386-bsd"

It's a very long process (took me a week since I was only ever home an
hour a day -- I'd come in, look at my checklist, type the next step, and
when it wasn't done by the time I had to go I'd just let it motor along
alone.  The next day I'd do the next step .  .   .    )
