Not that I would trade the compilers, but if you are Yes, gcc has a reputation for being awfully slow. This is still noticeable on the fast Ultrix RISC box I'm on now. However, it produces really good code, especially on traditional CPUs like the 386, and - perhaps even more important - it does rigid code checking. If you get a program through gcc -pedantic -ansi -Wall without errors, you know how to write clean code. :-) I still prefer gcc on any machine I'm currently working with. It is worth the extra time.
