X doesn't do anything with your disk drives, it even doesn't know something about them. The only question regarding X is: some video boards tend to block the whole machine (not necessary only at a disk access) if the bus clock is too high. David Wexelblat reported this phenomenon, and he told, configuring the video board to have a more relaxed timing (some boards have jumpers), or reducing the bus clock *might* help.
