Many thanks to Ducan McEwan and Mike Murphy for showing me
the way:

As you all 8) guessed I had to use partitions a, b, c and h.
I didn't quite figure out the problem with partition d.
I installed a lot of HD's here but NEVER had to leave
'd' empty. *maby a feature of 386bsd 8*).

Anyway, the disk wasn't even lowlevel formatted so I did
it on a sun. *is there no lowlevel-format prog for 386bsd?*

After formatting the disklabel -w -r as1 <mytype> worked fine
and the program asked me if I wanted to make a DOS partition ???
Well I answered no.

Everything including swap works now great!

Here is my new and working disktab entry:
dsp3160|Dec 1.3GB SCSI:\
        :dt=SCSI:ty=winchester:se#512:nt#16:ns#54:nc#2607:rm#5403:\
        :pa#1000512:oa#0:ta=4.2BSD:ba#4096:fa#512:\
        :pb#99360:ob#1000512:tb=swap: \
        :pc#2250720:oc#0:\
        :ph#1150848:oh#1099872:th=4.2BSD:bh#4096:fh#512:

Thanks again!

- Peter 8)
